Slate is built and operated by WELOIN Global Private Limited (“WELOIN”, “we”, “us”). This Privacy Policy explains what information Slate handles, why, and the choices you have. It applies to the Slate desktop app, the hosted web app at app.slateeditor.com, and the website at slateeditor.com.

The most important thing to know first: Slate is local-first. Your documents live on your own device. The content of the files you edit is not uploaded to us, and we never read what you write.

Local-first by design

When you use the Slate desktop app, every file you open or create stays on your machine. We do not sync, store, or transmit your document content to our servers. The desktop app reaches the network for one purpose only: to check our update server for new versions of the app. That check carries the information needed to return the right build (such as your app version and operating system) and does not include any of your document content.

The hosted web app at app.slateeditor.com runs in your browser. Your documents are kept in your browser’s local storage on your device unless you explicitly export or save them elsewhere.

What we collect

We keep data collection to the minimum needed to run the product:

• Your document content: not collected. Files stay on your device.
• Update checks: the desktop app sends your app version and platform to our update server so it can offer the correct download. Standard server logs may record an IP address as part of that request.
• Website analytics: our marketing website may use cookie-based analytics (for example, Google Analytics) to understand aggregate traffic, such as which pages are visited and roughly where visitors come from. See our Cookie Policy for details and how to opt out.
• Messages you send us: if you email us, we keep that correspondence so we can reply and provide support.

How we use information

We use the limited information described above to:

• deliver app updates and verify compatibility with your platform;
• understand, in aggregate, how the website is used so we can improve it;
• respond to your questions and support requests;
• keep our services secure and diagnose technical problems.

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use your document content for any purpose, including training models.

Cookies and analytics

Sharing and third parties

We share information only with service providers that help us operate Slate, such as our hosting, update-delivery, and analytics providers, and only to the extent they need it to perform that service. We may also disclose information if required by law or to protect our rights and users. We do not sell personal data.

Data retention

Because your documents never reach us, there is nothing of yours for us to retain. Server logs and analytics data are kept only for as long as needed for the purposes above and then deleted or anonymized. Support correspondence is kept for as long as needed to assist you and to maintain our records.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, or delete the limited personal information we hold about you, and to object to or restrict certain processing. To exercise any of these rights, contact us at hello@slateeditor.com and we will respond in line with applicable law.

Security

We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect the limited data we handle. Keeping your documents on your own device also means the most sensitive thing about your work never leaves your control. No method of transmission or storage is perfectly secure, but we work to safeguard what we do process.

Children

Slate is not directed to children under the age of 13 (or the minimum age in your jurisdiction), and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we will remove it.

Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the effective date at the top of this page. Significant changes will be communicated through the app or website where appropriate.
